In the contemporary society, the Internet becomes a major part of daily life that even children at their early ages know how to use Youtube to watch the contents they like, young adults use digital platforms to work on or to communicate and update news (Willoughby, 2018). The Internet also brought numerous of affection to people such as Studying or Entertaining. However, it comes with a critical chance of risks such as health, etc… however, the necessity of the Internet is undeniable. During the pandemic, people have to spend more time at home and unable to get in touch with others, and communicate through the Internet is a perfect way. Therefore, the number of Internet users has rapidly increased. According to Broadband search site, in 2020, they collected 500 million active users daily on Instagram. This average number is equivalent to 53 minutes per day. On Tiktok, the average daily time spent is 52 minutes with over 689 million users (How Many People Use TikTok? 80+ TikTok Statistics (2021), 2021). A lot of platforms have been created for different purposes and targets. Therefore, my research aims at young people and the contents they are associating with on social media, how they approach the Internet and use different digital platforms to meet their needs.
The research focuses on the young adults on social media. Because people are online most of their time and they intentionally or unintentionally create millions of ideas and contents (Donald, Anderson, and Spry, 2011). Therefore, I want to figure out the quality of their online time and if they use it effectively. The contents that young people usually interact with will also be showed and the news (if they can tell the difference between the fake news and the truth. I also want to know the platforms that young people prefer to read news and to communicate.
The questions are straightforward and will be created in the forms of Twitter polls, Google forms, and Tutorial communication so that students in BCM212 can easily approach them. Along with the polls, the project will also use simple questions, multiple choices, and short answers to not take much time of people and I can collect accurate information. The research will also be achievable to meet the criteria using the primary and secondary sources.
I believe that my research would help people to acknowledge the contents they interact with and the quality time they have on social media platforms. Because sometimes, they just randomly click on a post or video without knowing what the content is and stay on the site for a long period, which is such a waste. And I hope through my research, young adults can adjust their amount of online time and gather the information and news selectively.
